Clean technology encompasses a range of world changing
technologies that take advantage of renewable materials and energy
sources, dramatically reduce the use of natural resources, and
limit or eliminate emissions and wastes.
New Zealand has been a pioneer in a number of clean
technologies, including in renewable energy, lower emission
transport fuels energy efficiency, waste processing and sustainable
agriculture.
In the field of renewable energy, we have a long history of
producing power from hydro, geothermal and now wind.
This has spawned a number of innovations including improved wind
turbine designs and research into wave and tide energy systems.
Already, around 75 percent of New Zealand's energy generating
capability comes from renewable resources and this figure is
targeted to rise to 90 percent by 2025.
We have paired our technical skills in renewable energy with our
strengths in agricultural biotechnology, resulting in exciting
bio-fuel developments.
These include methods to extract bio-fuel from wild algae and
research into using New Zealand's forest plantation and grass
stocks as a renewable fuels.
Other advances include energy efficient motors, pumps and valves
for use in industrial processes, and energy saving devices for the
home. We continue to drive innovation in clean technologies.
