New Zealand is recognized as being animal disease-free by the
World Organization for Animal Health, enabling it to develop and
attract expertise in natural products, bioactives and
animal-derived therapeutics. Niche strengths have emerged in human
health research, agriculture and animal research, forestry, and
forensic and environmental sciences.
The country's rich pool of creative and commercially minded
scientists have developed products such as the anti-leukaemia drug
Amsacrine and the Acuset IV Flow controller. In 2009, Scientific
American Worldview ranked New Zealand in the top 10 countries in
terms of biotechnology innovation. These innovations are driven by
ongoing research and development, which, at around half the cost of
R&D in Europe and the United States, makes New Zealand a
desirable destination.
New Zealand's continued emphasis on discovery means there is a
steady pipeline of investment opportunities. International life
sciences company Life Technologies and food and nutrition giant
Nestle are among those who have taken advantage of New Zealand's
strengths in biotechnology.
Our existing markets and customers
continue to perceive strong value in animal derived products from
New Zealand, especially for applications where patient or animal
safety is a key driver for their products
