Ep3's Tory Marine Turbine Power Station
EnergyPacifica (Ep3) harnesses energy from renewable and
sustainable tidal currents and oceanic streams in New Zealand,
Australia and the greater Pacifica region.
Ep3 identifies sites with suitable bathymetry and highly energetic
tidal currents and then designs, develops and deploys world
leading, marine current turbine technologies. The company, on
developing new marine turbine arrays, plans to manage marine power
stations for converting "blue energy into green power".
The company is focused on deploying 84 fully-submerged, marine
turbines to harness energy from fast tidal currents in Tory
Channel, Marlborough Sounds, New Zealand, to generate 100 MW of
electric power for around 16 hours daily. Commercial marine
turbines are relatively small and yet produce twice as much power
as comparably rated wind turbines, and almost three times more than
photovoltaic solar arrays. Marine turbines, in this context, are
very cost effective for generating renewable energy.
The Tory Channel project will generate electricity to power more
than 69,000 homes in Christchurch or Wellington, New Zealand. Each
turbine will generate ~1.4 MW while mounted on the seafloor, and,
being articulated, each device can be floated to the surface
transiently for maintenance purposes. Ep3 is undertaking this
project in consort with a leading marine turbine developer.
Ep3's projects will generate renewable and sustainable energy,
while offsetting carbon emissions and their negative contribution
to climate change.
