Windflow Technology is a New Zealand based developer and
manufacturer of the two-bladed 500 kW Windflow 500 turbine.
Windflow Technology is currently producing up to 60 turbines a
year, but has capacity to expand to over 200 turbines a year.
The turbines are assembled using only quality components: 90
percent of the components are made in New Zealand with Australia
and Europe accounting for the rest.
The Windflow 500 is fully certified to IEC 61400-1:2005 (edition
3) Class 1A. The certifying body is Lloyd's Register. IEC
certification is a third party verification of the turbine design
and performance and it attests that the Windflow 500 will operate
for more than 20 years in the strongest, most turbulent wind regime
in the IEC classification.
Initial production was for the supply of 97 turbines to New
Zealand Windfarm's 48.5 MW Te Rere Hau development near Palmerston
North, New Zealand. This is one of the world's toughest testing
grounds with very turbulent conditions besides the high wind
speeds. The turbines are frequently operating in gale conditions
above 25 m/s.
In August 2010, Windflow appointed VG Energy as its exclusive UK
distributor to capitalize on demand within the UK for the Windflow
500. A new UK government policy is incentivizing small scale (up to
5MW) wind farms via feed-in-tariffs (FITs) and the Windflow 500
fits into the 100-500 kW bracket which for medium sized turbines is
the most profitable.
Further in line with their international growth plans, in
October 2010, Windflow signed a Memorandum of Understanding with
Dutch Energy Corporation (DEC) to install two Windflow 500 wind
turbines on DEC's wind farm in Palm Springs for demonstration and
as an entry point into the growing North American market.
